Be part of Inside Out – taking over Fed Square for PHOTO 2021

4.8.20

We are excited to reveal that with support from the City of Melbourne, Inside Out – the global participatory art project initiated by French artist JR – will be taking over Fed Square to mark the opening weekend of PHOTO 2021 (18 - 21 February 2021). And we want you to take part!

The Inside Out project has travelled from Ecuador to Nepal, and from Mexico to Palestine, inspiring group actions on varied themes such as hope, diversity, gender-based violence, climate change. PHOTO 2021’s Inside Out will transform messages of personal identity and truth into a giant work of art. Up to 1000 portraits will be printed as posters and pasted on Fed Square’s iconic main square, creating the largest group action in Australia.

In a time when the truth is being challenged, and newspapers are being silenced, this is a public call to arms. The Inside Out Project gives everyone a platform to speak their truth.

To take part, visit our website to submit a photo of yourself, along with a personal statement answering the question “What is Your Truth?”.  You can take your own photo or get family members or a housemate to take one for you. For those of you who have already submitted your portrait in the lead up to our original Festival dates, your portraits will be included. Photos need to be over 1MB in size at 100 dpi and capture your face. Images of pets, backs of heads, groups of people and inanimate objects will not be accepted. Selected responses to the question will be shared on photo.org.au, on the Fed Square screen and by Inside Out.

With isolation being felt by so many right now, particularly for Victorians, we look forward to bringing our community to Fed Square once we can all come together again.

PHOTO Australia respectfully acknowledges the traditional custodians of the lands upon which we work and live, and the rich and diverse Indigenous cultures across what is now called Australia. For over 60,000 years, Indigenous arts and culture have thrived on this sacred land, and we honour Elders and cultural leaders past and present. This was, and always will be, Aboriginal land.
